Nutrition and Health

There has been a  massive amount of  research of late between the relation ship between nutrition and health.  It seems that on a daily basis there is a new study that comes out linking some sort of natural product, vitamin, or mineral that can greatly improve our lives and protect us from diseases.  There also seems to be a growing trend in people that want to learn more about this relationship.  The problem with this is that most doctors do not promote nutrition or nutritional products.   Top doctors in this area have flat out said that doctors should become more educated in this area.  Take for example, the world famous Dr. Oz.  Anytime you watch his show he talks highly about the relationship between nutrition and health.  This is a very broad topic but I will go over some of the most important ones.

Vegetables- they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber.  Another extremely important benefit of vegetables is they make your blood more alkaline.  Diseases cannot survive  in blood that is alkaline.  For alot of people who have a hard time consuming the recommended 10-12 servings a day I recommend they take a greens supplement.

Fruits-are a very good source of antioxidants.  Antioxidants provide protection against free radicals and free radicals are known to cause cancer, as well as a bunch of other diseases.  Fruits are loaded with vitamins and fiber but must be consumed in moderation when trying to lose weight. This is because of the effect of fructose on thyroid function.  When people are trying to lose weight I limit them to 2 servings a day from low glycemic sources such as berries.

Vitamins/Minerals- are often neglected when it comes to a person’s diet.  With today’s diet many people are deficient in various vitamins and minerals.  I highly recommend people supplement with a high quality multi vitamin/mineral to correct these deficiencies.  This is especially important when following any sort of restrictive diet.  Remember, alot of times you get what you pay for when it comes to supplements.

Fish Oil/Omega3- you can’t talk about nutrition and health without mentioning omega 3.  There are numerous studies promoting it’s many health properties especially it’s ability to provide protection from heart attacks and strokes.  Omega 3′s are also a powerful anti inflammatory and help with normal brain function.  Today’ s diet has  a major deficiency in omega 3′s.  It is best to supplement these as it is next to impossible to get enough through your diet.  I would take no less than 6g/day.

I have personally witnessed natural supplements that have given tremendous benefits to my clients.  Nutrition for kids is very important as more kids today are overweight and malnourished at the same time. The Winnipeg nutrition section of this website will provide you with nutrition tips to help you remain happy and healthy.
