Fitness Assessment
A fitness assessment is a series of measurements that help determine physical fitness. No matter what you fitness goals are, you should be get an assessment done. There are several standard tests in doing a fitness assessment. It will vary from trainer to trainer on what kind of tests they give. Some will prefer to do certain tests over others. Remember the assessment is only as good as the person doing it.
The main tests in a fitness assessment evaluate body mass index(BMI), resting heart rate, blood pressure, and aerobic fitness. Additional tests may evaluate body composition, lung capacity, flexibility and strength.
Body Mass Index or BMI is the standard test that puts your height vs your weight for for a given body frame type. I prefer not to use BMI whatsoever due to the fact of the limitations it has for people who carry more muscle mass. For example a person with alot of muscle but little fat will score poorly on the BMI scale.
It is always recommended that a person check with their doctor before starting a fitness program. There they will be checked for their resting heart rate and blood pressure. Also the fitness instructor should be getting the client to fill out a Par Q form. If they check off any medical conditions they should consult with their doctor first.
Once you have your fitness assessment done I encourage you to check out the Winnipeg fitness section of this website to give you tips on how to maximize your time for results.
